I ran 6 miles this morning. I ran them closer to a tempo run trying to exert a decent amount of energy forcing a recovery for my legs afterward. I stayed on my feet a lot for most of the day. We had lunch with the Schneiders, but I parked a quarter mile from the restaurant. Even though I don’t plan to do more than recover this summer, I wanted to maintain my regular activity today. I will still have my normal daily activity while training for this summer, so I need to see how I will react to the training as much as the Run.
When we got home, I started getting ready for the second part of today’s training. I was planning on 12 minute miles for 2 hours or 12 miles whichever I felt like while I was running. I ended up with 11 ½ miles at 11:40ish average pace. I ran with the Camelback and drank a mix of Gatorade and water. Gatorade alone is too sweet for me while I run, so usually do a 1 to 1 mix with water. I also had an Powerbar Energy Blend that I ate at mile 6. I probably could have taken 2. I looped around our neighborhood, down by Kroger, and the business park. I felt okay the whole run. The last mile really was draining mentally. I used the 3/2 breathing method to maintain and focus until the end of the run.
At home, I ran a cold bath. I’m not ready for ice baths yet. Letting your legs float in a bath is relaxing and helps recovery. The cold in the bath helps reduce inflammation and aches. I figure if professional ball players routinely use ice baths, why shouldn’t I? They have training staffs, doctors, and research and use them. It seems like an easy plan to follow to recover faster. Even if it is psychosomatic, I still will use them.
Overall this was a good weekend, I got to see my sister and brother-in-law, the Schneiders, and had a successful trial run on my two-a-days. It will not get easier, but it feels more possible.
